Forget everything you’ve ever read about becoming a badass, because most of it simply isn’t true.
You don’t need to get tough, stalk members of the opposite sex for their phone numbers or work out in the gym for hours to build muscles that leave you looking like She-Ra. You don’t need to waste thousands on spa treatments to try to conceal your cellulite or pile on the makeup to disguise your blemishes.
Because you’re already a pretty awesome badass human being. It’s just a case of ripping off your everyday clothes and revealing the superhero inside.
Here are ten tips that will help you unleash your badass-ness (is that even a word??) into the world and start kicking butt!!
1. Stop putting yourself down
It always amazes me how many people think it’s OK to harshly criticise themselves all the time, even though they’d never put up with that kind of treatment if they heard it from a friend or family member. Sound familiar?
Instead of treating yourself with the unconditional loving care you deserve, you listen to that negative inner voice. You tell yourself that you’re just not good enough and you bully yourself into believing that you’re somehow ‘broken’.
But this is simply not true.
You are so beautifully, wonderfully unique. There’s no one like you in the whole world. So it’s time to embrace that. Embrace your uniqueness, stand up for your worth and most of all, stop putting yourself down.
2. Demand respect!
Yes, I know you’re a nice person, and your parents brought you up to be kind and accomodating. But that doesn’t mean you should let people treat you like dirt. Or let them walk all over you and then cry yourself to sleep at night.
So stop being a martyr.
You deserve to be respected, so start demanding it.
Challenge people when they do you wrong. Make your personal boundaries clear to the world and then stick to them. And don’t be afraid to move on, to walk away from a relationship if this isn’t happening. You deserve so much more.
3. Look after your body!
Your inner badass knows that taking care of that awesome body of yours should always be a priority, even if you still find yourself comfort eating at the end of a long hard day or skipping yet another workout this week because you just can’t face it.
After all, your body is the place you’ll be living for (hopefully) 80+ years, so you want to be taking good care of it.
Kick-start it all by doing these things:
- Exercising: Gets you stronger mentally and physically so you are ready to face practically anything. It will also increase your confidence, boost your self esteem and show you what you’re really capable of.
- Eat well: Quit the processed junk food and switch to a wholefood diet which prioritizes plants to help you body work optimally and keep you feeling strong, empowered and happy.
- Sleep: You need around 8 hours per night, so don’t try to kid yourself otherwise. Set yourself a healthy bedtime and then stick to it.
4. Give yourself the love you deserve
Everyone needs love, and the best source of that love is….yes that’s right YOURSELF.
Don’t worry if this just sounds self-indulgent or crazy to you- you won’t be the first to cringe when you hear those words.
The problem is, we believe that to be a badass human, we somehow have to be ultra strong and completely unbeatable. We believe that slowing down, asking for help or even showing ourselves some TLC is showing weakness.
But in actual fact, NOT showing yourself this love is a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that you don’t value yourself or your own needs enough to honour them, that you believe that you don’t really deserve to feel that love. This needs to stop.
It’s time to listen to your body.
Sleep if you feel tired. Eat if you feel hungry. Skip work and head to the beach if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Book a last-minute trip somewhere if your heart is aching for some adventure. Paint your nails a crazy colour. Stay in bed all day. Get a new tattoo. Do whatever it takes to show yourself the love and make you feel good.
5. Be brave and take action!
Don’t just sit there with your head in the clouds, dreaming of sailing the world in your yacht, landing your dream job as a physiotherapist, making millions as a bestselling author, running an ultra-marathon, or whatever you personal dream might be, believing that you can’t do it.
Don’t fill your head with excuses of why you can’t do this thing: I don’t have the time, I’m too poor, I’m just not clever enough, I’ve got kids, I’m getting too old…and so the excuses go on…
There is (almost) nothing in this world that you can’t make happen. You just have to want it enough.
You just have to get super focused, write yourself a game plan and take action to make it happen. Simple.
6. Face your fears
Facing your fears is an important part of unleashing your inner badass. Because you’ll never completely crush your dreams and get insanely successful if you always run and hide when fer strikes.
Yes, fear is a normal human emotion and I’m not suggesting for a second that you try to pretend that it’s not there because it always will be.
Even the most badass human still feels that fear. But they know that if they find that 20 seconds of courage, they can push through and allow themselves to shine. Even if they’re s****** themselves on the inside.
You see, life is all about the challenge. It’s about recognising the fear when it whispers in your ear but doing it anyway.
7. Personal growth and development is key
Personal growth and development is an essential part of being human, especially when it comes to unleashing your inner badass.
Because no-one wants to feel like their life has turned stagnant and you’re simply treading water until the Grim Reaper turns up.
Learning and discovering new stuff keeps up happy. And a happy human is always badass.
So always take time to learn new stuff, follow your interests and passions, dive deep into your existing loves and keep challenging yourself to try new stuff.
8. Stop looking for approval
Us humans are social creatures, so naturally it matters to us what other people think about what we’re doing with our lives.
The trouble is, all too often this can trap us into following other people’s hopes and dreams (like going into the family business because that’s what your parents wanted) or even also sacrificing our own dreams because we think we’re not allowed to.
But hang on just a second. You might not have noticed, but we’re adults now!
We can do whatever the hell we like, provided it doesn’t hurt anyone. We really don’t need their validation or their approval. Because we’re living our own lives.
So please, listen to your heart, discover what YOU really want and don’t worry about keeping other people happy.
9. Find your inner calm
Badass humans don’t have time for drama, stress or chaos because it’s just a waste of time and energy. If s*** goes wrong, they assess the situation, they face what has happened and they just carry on regardless.
They’ll stay calm, in control and never panic about the ‘what ifs’ and ‘maybes’…
And you know how they do that? They learn to harness the power of their own minds. They experiment with meditation, yoga, visualisation, or some other creative hobby that brings them into a place of flow and allows them to disconnect.
10. Simplify your life
Have you ever looked around you and felt completely overwhelmed with everything? There’s just too much to do, too much stuff to take care off, too much to organise and everything is manic? Yep, me too.
So what do you think your inner badass would do? Would they keep complaining and hope it all magically disappeared? Would it wish the stacks of paper and piles of ironing away?
You know as well as I do that they would take action. So do the following: sit back a moment and ask yourself one simple questions: “Does this add value to my life?”
And if that thing in question doesn’t add value, it’s time to get it out of your life.
I’m not just talking about your personal possessions that clutter up your house. I’m also talking about anything that is draining your time, money or happiness and doesn’t give you value in return. (Read my article: ‘Here’s The Truth About Being A Minimalist’ for more on this.)
Let’s just remind ourselves again- we are already badass human beings, all of us. And we’re all wonderfully unique, completely loveable and absolutely awesome. So remember to stand up tall, take care of your body and mind, constantly strive for greatness and you will unleash your inner badass into the world!
